Investigation into Transported Pigs to Hawaii

Messages recommandés

Undercover video captured by animal rights groups follow the transport of live pigs from Canada to Hawaii. A seven day journey by truck and boat, that they say is unnecessary.

"The treatment of the animals during long distance transport, even though they are to be killed upon arrival should concern all of us because it's cruel and unnecessary," says Dena Jones, World Society for the Protection of Animals.

Claiming during transport the pigs got little food, water or rest.

"Animals that are transported long distance often arrive injured, starved, dehydrated and generally stressed," says Jones.

Matson Navigation Company told KHON-2 onboard their ship - that's not the case.

Stating, they provide a trained livestock tender to accompany the pigs - to ensure they get water, proper ventilation and easy to access food.

The State Department of Agriculture says they inspect each shipment of livestock, and have not found any form of mis-treatment.

"When they reach honolulu they are off loaded, they're taken straight to the slaughter house to be off loaded again on to the ground they're washed, fed and they're rested," says the owner of Wong's Meat Market.

But, some animal rights groups say the process in itself is unnecessary - And misleading to consumers. Who might think their buying locally grown meat, under the label "Island Produced."

Companies such as Foodland disagree. Saying their label only means the meat is island processed.

"So for the consumer who goes into the grocery store and wants to buy truly island produced pork, they'd need to verify with that store," says Jones.

Local meat processors say almost all pork, beef and poultry found in your grocery's deli originates from the mainland.

Activists say their goal is to stop transport of animals for slaughter. And encourage frozen or cooked meat, to be imported instead.
