Frog leg pizza row: 'Refined' says the chef. 'Barbaric' say animal rights campaigners

Animal rights campaigners are furious after a restaurant chain introduced Britain's first-ever frogs' legs pizza.

The 'Hopper' pizza contains between six and eight legs on a tomato and mozzarella base with capers, herbs, and a scoop of anchovy sorbet. It has been launched by London restaurant chain Eco priced £17.95.

But animal rights campaigners have slammed the dish as 'barbaric' because frogs' legs are traditionally amputated while they are still alive.
A spokewoman for Animal Aid described international trade in the delicacy as 'vicious' and urged people to boycott the restaurant.
'Whatever reassurances might be offered by those involved, frogs are treated in a sickening and barbaric manner so that this restaurant can serve up a so-called delicacy of frogs' legs pizza' she said.

'The animals typically have their limbs hacked off whilst still alive having been captured by the bucket from the wild in countries like Indonesia.
'I cannot believe people are so desperate to entertain their palates that they want to be part of this vicious and callous trade.'
The controversial Hopper pizza is available at Eco's two London restaurants.
Chef Sami Wasif, who came up with the idea during a trip to Paris, defended his creation, describing it as 'refined'.
'I've been making pizza for more than 20 years in London and know this is a city that is always looking for something new,' he said.
'Most people see pizza as a quick meal but this is something a little more refined.

'You need a finger bowl and must take time over the legs - not shovel the whole pizza into your mouth.
'Pizza is one of those things that you can experiment with. Who knows, I might try one with snails on it next.'

C'est dégeulasse il suffit de s'imaginer l'horrible souffrance que doit causer une fracture des jambes alors que vous etes pleinement conscient : j'ai déja vu, quand j'étais jeune, des ados briser les pattes des grenouilles vivantes... c'est absolument affreux. Pourquoi faire subir cet horrible traitement sur des animaux pour une pizza??! Un simple repas??

Meme si les grenouilles seraient déja mortes alors qu'ils les mutileraient, il serait parfaitement inutile de les sacrifier en l'honneur d'un plat ''raffiné''!

Tu as raison Cath, c'est absolument affreux de torturer ces pauvres animaux ! Et en +, dans le monde, presque toutes les grenouilles sont menacées de disparition

Espérons que la pizza de cette chaîne de restaurant d'Angleterre ne fera pas fureur...

p.s.: Tu sais sans doute qu'il se mange énormément de pattes de grenouilles au Québec (?)

En fait, je l'ignorais... je ne croyais pas que c'était commun ici, mais je suis peinée de l'apprendre.
