Man charged for catching, cooking squirrel

LOWELL, Mass., Oct. 17 2008 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts man has been charged with catching and killing a squirrel and then roasting it with a blowtorch in his backyard.

Odum Chaloeurn's neighbors in Lowell reported him to the police, the Boston Herald said. He was charged with animal cruelty Wednesday.

Chaloeurn reportedly argued to police that he was not cruel to the squirrel since it was dead before he began cooking it. He allegedly pursued the squirrel on foot, grabbed it by its tail and then knocked it against a tree to kill it.

Squirrels are actually legal game in Massachusetts to licensed hunters. But Lowell is in a district where the squirrel season opens Saturday.

There is no word yet on whether Chaloeurn faces a citation for violation of hunting regulations in addition to the cruelty charge.

Police: Woman taped dogs' mouths shut

JOHNSTON, R.I., Oct. 7 2008(UPI) -- Police in Johnston, R.I., say a woman left her two pit bulls with their mouths taped shut without food or water while she gave birth to her son at a hospital.

Diana Tetrault, 20, was charged with two counts of animal cruelty after she allegedly left the dogs alone in her apartment with their mouths taped shut for two days, the Providence (R.I.) Journal reported Tuesday.

Johnston police Maj. Ralph Bubar III said neighbors reported the sound of whimpering dogs to an animal control officer and told the officer no one had been seen entering or leaving the apartment in two days.

Bubar said Officer Erin Medeiros found the dogs in emaciated condition with injuries stemming from the electrical tape used to muzzle them.

Police allege man threw dog from balcony
Published: Sept. 27, 2008 at 3:09 PM

ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- A 44-year-old man in St. Paul, Minn., severely injured his former girlfriend's dog by throwing it from a third-story balcony, police allege.

Police said Friday that Donald Dornseif allegedly threw the 3-year-old dog off the balcony this week while three young children, including his own 6-year-old daughter, were playing directly behind him, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

A 2-year-old girl, Elizabeth Mabry, also allegedly witnessed the Thursday incident as she stood below the balcony.

"Doggie went boom," the young girl told her mother, Andrea.

The dog sustained such significant injuries it was euthanized, the Pioneer Press reported.

The newspaper said Dornseif, who alleges the dog simply jumped out of his arms and over the balcony's railing, has been charged with felony animal cruelty.
