CALGARY -- A virus that has swept through zoos killing captive elephants has claimed a beloved baby elephant at the Calgary Zoo, officials confirmed on the weekend.

Malti, a 15-month-old Asian elephant, started showing flu-like symptoms early last week, and was given antiviral medication. A diagnosis of Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus, or elephant herpes, was confirmed on Friday. The virus strikes suddenly and moves swiftly, often killing young elephants within days.

Zookeepers were with the little pachyderm Saturday afternoon when she died.
