Animal 0 Posté(e) le 21 décembre 2008 Sask. farmers getting extended access to gopher poison Last Updated: Thursday, December 11, 2008 The Canadian Press Saskatchewan farmers looking to rid their fields of pesky gophers are getting more access to a harsh poison. The province says Canada's federal pest management agency has extended the emergency use of two per cent liquid strychnine to the end of July 2009. The move will help producers until a long-term solution can be found, Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud said. There are 171 rural municipalities currently eligible to distribute strychnine to their farmers. Gopher damage has been extensive in Saskatchewan ‹ the province's crop insurance program paid out $1 million to cover damages in the southwest part of the province last year. Access to strychnine was restricted years ago because of the harm it did to other wildlife, but the rules were relaxed in 2007 to help farmers in southwestern Saskatchewan deal with the severe infestation. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/saskatchewan/story/2008/12/11/strychnine.html Partager ce message Lien à poster Partager sur d’autres sites
