Hongrie - le foie gras patrimoine protégé

Messages recommandés

En Hongrie aussi, le parlement a déclaré que le foie gras faisait partie de l'héritage culturel du pays et qu'il devait, à ce titre, être protégé !

We will resume production of foie gras at our factory in Szentes (south east Hungary) next week,” József Magyar, CEO of meat producer Hungerit Zrt announced last week. Magyar is confident that animal rights organisation Four Paws will no longer be able to damage the company following Parliament’s declaration that goose liver is part of the country’s national heritage and should be protected.

Animal rights group Four Paws placed Hungerit Zrt on its black list because it considers force-feeding geese to enlarge their livers unethical. As a result Hungerit lost several of its Austrian and German partners in the second half of 2008. The aggressive campaign meant that Hungerit had to lay off 200 employees and temporarily stop production in September. According to a report in the business daily Napi Gazdaság Hungerit lost revenues of some HUF 4 billion (roughly EUR 14.7 million) as a result. The Hungarian Poultry Farmers’ Association estimates the total damage suffered by Hungarian agriculture at some HUF 7 to 8 billion (EUR 25.72-29.32 million)

Traditional Hungarian goose liver threatened to disappear altogether. At the end of November, however, Parliament declared followed the example of the French Parliament by declaring goose liver part of the national heritage that should be protected. Hungerit now intends to continue production.

László Bárány, president of the Poultry Farmers’ Association is even planning to take legal action against the Austrian parent organisation of Four Paws and is seeking the legal representation of a reputable German law firm, he told the daily Népszava.

It is debatable whether German and Austrian chains will still be interested in buying the products following the negative campaign. As a result Hungarit intends to reduce production. According to József Magyar only 16,000 to 20,000 animals will be slaughtered each week compared to the usual 30,000.
