Sponsors told the Agriculture Committee on Wednesday that foie gras, or fatty liver, is produced by force-feeding ducks and geese. Katie Lisnick of the Humane Society of the United States said that damages the birds' livers and abdomens and can be painful. Maine has no facility that produces foie gras, but some restaurants serve the product. Maine restaurant owners and chefs, including Republican Rep. Brian Langley of Ellsworth, said the bill is anti-business because it gives a product they serve a bad name to consumers. Others said they have visited a foie gras farm in New York and the birds were treated humanely.
