Sen. Harb returns from seal hunt watch

Liberal Sen. Mac Harb has just returned from witnessing this year's commercial seal hunt in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
He described the trip both as "excellent" and a "frustrating" experience.
"The trip was incredible, an experience of a life time, we need to take action!!!," the senator wrote to Sun Media in an email Sunday.
Harb left Friday morning on a flight to Charlottetown, PEI. There he picked up his permit to observe the hunt from the department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. He also met up with members of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) who took him on their plane and ferried him around various hunt sites.

Harb said he was extremely frustrated that the department would not tell IFAW where the hunt was actually taking place.
"We were turning in circles like chickens without heads looking around to find out where are these sealers? Where are these boats? For a whole day! And another half a day," Harb said in an interview on Monday.
The senator spent Saturday around les Iles de la Madeleine and Sunday in Nova Scotia before returning back to PEI.

"I saw all these bodies lying in a sea of blood. In less than 24 hours, they have slaughtered thousands of them and left bodies everywhere," he said.
The senator said he was also shocked to see the amount of waste - staffed ships sitting idle - and plans to asked the Auditor General to look into the cost of maintaining the seal hunt. He believes paying hunters not to hunt would be less expensive.

Tomorrow at 1:30 PM, Harb and his staff will take a red wheelbarrow filled with letters, petitions, and CD-ROMs representing the 87,000 emails, postcards, and telephone calls his office has received from supporters, and wheel it from the East block to the main hall of the Senate chamber.
He said he plans to make the trek with the wheelbarrow every time he tables new petitions.
