ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A Newfoundland MP says he wants to speak with U.S. President Barack Obama about the annual East Coast seal hunt.

Scott Simms says he believes the president needs to learn more about the hunt because of views he shared in a 2006 letter to animal rights activists.

The letter, written when Obama was an Illinois senator, expressed outrage over the hunt.

Simms says the points made in Obama's letter are the same ones animal rights activists have used for years.

The Liberal MP says he would appreciate the opportunity to explain to Obama the importance of the hunt to Newfoundlanders and how humane it is.
