hop 0 Posté(e) le 18 septembre 2009 Seal protesters aren’t taking the summer off this year. The latest bit of theatre — two actually — took place Wednesday as Prime Minister Stephen Harper was visiting Washington. In the U.S. capital, a group of animal rights kooks dressed as white coats and covered in blood flopped around in front of the Canadian Embassy until police dragged them away. In this nation’s capital, another anti-seal hunt group managed to sneak their way into the public gallery of the Commons and disrupted proceedings. Seeing this type of silliness go on other than in the spring when the seal hunt is going ahead is rare indeed. To borrow a phrase — they must be smelling blood. The European Union has not long ago voted to ban imports of seal products into that massive economic region, and that, combined with lower prices and higher costs are combining to put the seal hunt in a tight spot. It may, before long, spell the end of the seal hunt. The federal government is fighting the good fight to save the industry but without much success. The feds have threatened to take the EU before the World Trade Organization to have the ban overturned, but that will take years even to get a hearing. It appears the animal rights wing nuts are winning the public relations battles and the seal hunters are losing at every turn. Emotions are defeating the truth in this case.
