Nearly three hundred agriculture students, professors and animal-welfare activists packed a hall Thursday for a polite discussion on the ethics of housing pregnant pigs in cramped gestation crates. "A sow is an at-risk animal," said Twyla François, the head of investigation with Canadians for the Ethical Treatment of Food Animals. Describing gestation crates as a kind of torture chamber, she showed photos of sows suffering pressure wounds, open ulcers, fused limbs and congestive heart failure after being stuck in crates without the ability to move. The European Union has imposed a ban that will phase out gestation crates by 2012.
