An investigation of a Smithfield Foods pig farm by the Humane Society of the United States found pregnant pigs suffering from large, open sores and bleeding from their mouths, and piglets being tossed around by their hind legs at the facility in Waverly.

An undercover Humane Society investigator, employed at the Waverly farm for 34 days, also videotaped a lame pig being prodded with a metal gate rod to force it to move and another being thrown into a trash bin, still breathing, after being shot in the head.

"I don't think there's anyone with a heart in their chest who could not be appalled by the conditions that those animals live in," said Robin Starr, CEO of the Richmond Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which hosted the Humane Society's news conference Wednesday.

Dennis Treacy, senior vice president of corporate affairs and chief sustainability officer for Virginia-based Smithfield Foods, said the company takes the allegations seriously and assembled a team to investigate. He said the investigative team, which includes the state veterinarian, was at work Wednesday on the premises of the Waverly facility in Sussex County.

Treacy viewed a video the Humane Society put together to show the results of its investigation Tuesday.
