Grey seal hunt opens today

Published on February 16, 2011

Chris Hayes Anti-hunt activists expected to be on Hay Island as observers

SYDNEY — Fisheries and Oceans has set today as the official opening date of the season for hunting grey seals on Hay Island off the eastern coast of Cape Breton, which has become a battleground in the bitter conflict between sealers and anti-hunt activists.

Topics : First Nations , Hay Island , Atlantic Canada , Cape Breton The quota for Hay Island has been set at 1,900 grey seals compared to last year’s limit of 2,200 animals, although the 2010 hunt did not go ahead because sealers couldn’t find markets.

Hay Island’s quota is part of a larger overall grey seal quota for Atlantic Canada of 60,000, a 10,000 increase over last year.

Fisheries and Oceans adviser Andrew Newbould said although today is the official opening day of the season, the hunt is dependent on weather conditions.

Sealers must also be licensed by Fisheries and Oceans and be listed on a conservation plan approved by the department, which Newbould thought may be in place as early as today. They also require a permit from
the Nova Scotia government for Hay Island, which is a provincial wilderness protected area.

Hay Island is a rocky landscape that is part of the Scaterie Island Wilderness Area off Cape Breton.

Sealer Robert Courtney said Wednesday they wouldn’t be heading out to Hay Island today but do have the markets to justify a hunt this year.

Courtney, president of the North of Smokey Fishermen’s Association, declined to disclose the identity of the buyer.

“When we are ready to move and the buyer has everything in place, we’ll be going.”

He said First Nations sealers will be along this year for training purposes.

Courtney declined to comment Wednesday on the opposition to the Hay Island hunt but has in recent years scoffed at the use of the term “slaughter,” saying veterinarians and Fisheries and Oceans officials have observed seal hunts and approved them as a humane harvest. Mad

The grey seal population in Atlantic Canada is out of control, he has said.

Rebecca Aldworth of the Humane Society International/Canada said the anti-hunt activists will be on Hay Island as observers.
