Lack of ice stymies seal hunt in Gulf

Published: March 31, 2011 11:37 a.m.
HALIFAX - Only a couple of boats have headed out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence to participate in the annual seal hunt because of poor conditions.

Officials with the federal Fisheries Department say the lack of ice in the area has caused fishermen to keep their boats tied up in Nova Scotia and the north shore of Quebec.

Christian Houle, area director for Fisheries in the region, says only fishermen from the Iles-de-la-Madeleine have participated in the hunt so far.He says only 450 harp seals have been harvested since the hunt began earlier this week.

Houle says he doesn't expect too many people from the islands to participate this year since the conditions are bad and there are few markets for the pelts.

Denis Longuepee of the island's sealers association says that may change in the coming years if ice conditions improve and the Chinese market opens up to Canadian seal products.

Ottawa has struck a deal to export seal products to the country, but has to finalize protocols through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
