Soins holistiques

Donc back à 20mg par jour.

Marina Zacharias is or was a basset hound breeder who got caught up in the natural approach of rearing dogs about 20 years ago...right before everyone jumped on the bandwagon.

In the beginning because there were so many problems with getting bitches pregnant, carrying litters full term, whelping and then raising puppies, she started there using homeopathic and holostic remedies with tremendous sucess. Today she is still the source for many breeders who need the Fading Puppy concottion.

Eskies pretty much don't need this but Poms can use all the help they can get.

My background is conventional medicine. I haven't studied other types. I do believe they have their place but primarily if it has helped others then I would at least try it. And if Jean Dodds suggests that route I'd already have the remedies in the mail from Marina.

Marina's site is www.naturalrearing.com
Another interesting site http://www.norwichtales.com/xhtml/interview_with_marina.htm

Citation :
Dr. Dodds:

We believe our American Eskimo puppy, had a severe vaccine reaction to her 9-weeks shots. She was in excellent health until the day after the shots when she had diarrhea and two seizures. Since then, she's had the seizures off and on. Each seizure starts with smacking and drooling and ends with "blindness" and confusion.

The breeder recently contacted you about this situation and then forwarded your reply to us. You recommended that homeopathics, such as Thuja. Since there were no homeopathic vets in our area, I did contact Marina Zacharias about the Thuja and anything else that might help. Ms. Zacharias did contact me and suggested the following in addition to the Thuja: Forskollin, Tibetan Nerve, B6 niacinamide, and magnesium complex.

Many people I have spoken to value your opinion so that's why we're going to get the Thuja if you think we still need it. I'm not meaning to sound rude to Ms. Zacharias, but do you think we need to give her all the other products mentioned by her? We're somewhat concerned about putting so many other "drugs" into such a small puppy whose immune system is already having such a hard time. Right now, she is still taking prednisone (10 mg a day) and Benadryl (about 20 mg a day), so her condition seems to be stabilized. When I stopped giving her the Benadryl last week and reduced her prednisone to 10 mg every other day (as prescribed by the vet), she started having her seizures again. In fact on this past Saturday, 15-week-old Cheyenne had two seizures (just as she did the day after her 9-weeks shots).

What do you suggest? Should we keep giving her the prednisone and Benadryl for a few more weeks and then try to decrease the amounts? Should we give her the Thuja also? Should we get all the products mentioned by Ms. Zacharias? We eagerly await your response and thank you in advance for your advice.

Citation :
You should add Thuja. The other supplements Marina mentioned are designed to stabize the pup's nervous system. The adverse reaction was likely due to the distemper component in the vaccine -- assuming that she hasn't had rabies vaccine yet. The important things to remember are : NO MORE vaccines of any kind at least for several months. Most of the puppies that have these reactions have very high vaccine antibody titers when it comes to distemper and parvovirus when levels are checked 3-6 weeks after the vaccine. The treatment with steroids should continue at tapering doses for at least 2 months -- the reduction of steroid dose must be gradual -- it was apparently reduced too quickly. She could have 10 mg one day and 5 mg the next, for example for 5-7 days, then 5 mg one day and 2.5 mg the next for 7 days, then 2.5 mg every other day. IF she has anything more severe than a tremor at that point then you need to increase the steroid dose slightly again. It takes time for the stimulated immune system to heal.

Best,

Jean

A suivre....
