GANDER, NFLD. — Police are investigating death threats recorded at the home of a Newfoundland fisherman involved in a confrontation last week at the seal hunt off the Magdalen Islands

Rendell Genge's name, mailing address, phone number and the name of his wife were listed on an April 2 posting to a weblog attached to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society website.

On Thursday, a link to the weblog was made inactive, and leader Paul Watson said he ordered the personal information about Genge to be removed.

Genge said his family has received 50 or 60 threatening calls.

"They're telling us they're going to skin me, they're going to kill me, they're going to kill my family … they're coming to get us," Genge said.

His wife turned the answering machine audio over to the RCMP and disconnected the phone.

Watson said he has no idea how Genge's name and number were posted.

"As for him getting any threats or anything, you know, I know nothing about that," said Watson.

Genge said his family is scared, but the incident will not stop him from sealing next year.

Meanwhile, a death threat was recently delivered to the Canadian High Commission in London, on the same day Newfoundland MP Scott Simms was there to talk about the seal hunt.

Simms, a Liberal backbencher representing Bonavista-Exploits, was travelling with other MPs last week to discuss foreign overfishing and the seal hunt with European Union officials.

"There was a message sent in – and I'm not quoting directly, because I didn't see the actual written paper itself – but it said basically, you know, if any more seals are killed, then you're next," Simms said.

"I don't think it was pointed at me, although I don't know if [they knew] I was there, and certainly I don't think they were aware [that in] my riding we derive a lot of our income from the seal harvest itself."

Officials with the Canadian High Commission say they routinely receive similar notes.

Je me demande s'ils feront aussi des enquêtes pour les menaces "armées" qui ont été dirigées envers des défenseurs des animaux par des chasseurs de phoques ...
