It was an exciting night, resident Edward Soolook told the Anchorage Daily News. When he heard of the catch by Thomas Menadalook Jr. and his crew about midnight, "I just started running to houses saying, 'We need help! They got a whale!'" The Diomede harvest marks the first successful hunt of the year for dozens of Inupiat whaling crews along Alaska's northern coast. The bowheads are migrating north through the Bering Strait and into the Chukchi and Beaufort seas and will be hunted as they pass the Inupiat villages along the coast.
