Tous ces animaux seront envoyés dans 4 fermes d'élevage canadiennes pour leur fourrure - GANDER WATCHES THE FUR FLY FROM DENMARK GANDER - Gander is being invaded this week – not by soldiers, but by mink. 19 avril 2005 - Thousands of mink have been arriving in Gander aboard massive cargo planes, en route to mink farms in central Newfoundland. One load of 4,000 mink is headed to a new farm in Harcourt, on Smith's Sound. Iceland Air pilot Omar Arason spent five hours ferrying the animals across the Atlantic. "The animals smell a lot," he says. "Even coming to the hotel yesterday, I was sniffing … I was still smelling the smell." Along with a lingering smell comes lingering value. The mink are all pregnant, and ready to whelp any day. Trucker Alex Martin says the cargo requires special care, with a steady supply of air. "[We have to] get them moving as soon as possible; [you] can't stop once you've got them onboard," he says. "It's a bit more stressful than most loads." Another 3,000 Danish mink are expected to land Tuesday night in Gander, destined for a new farm just outside Botwood. Jorn Mogenson, a Danish fur farmer, declined a formal interview. He said European fur farmers who have run out of land have been expanding into Atlantic Canada, where there is plenty available. By the end of this week, four large mink farms will be operating in the province. Partager ce message Lien à poster Partager sur d’autres sites
