Traps Meeting Requirements of AIHTS and Certification Status

Ottawa - September 15, 2005 - The Fur Institute of Canada has updated the
list of traps meeting the requirements of the Agreement on International
Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS), indicating their certification status as
of September 15, 2005.

This latest update includes 17 new additions: four for beaver on land and
underwater that were previously on the list for underwater use only, one for
beaver (on land), two for fisher, nine for muskrat (on land), and one for
raccoon. All traps on the list have now been certified, except for those
killing traps listed for river otter (underwater), weasel and lynx.

Our goal remains to ensure the availability of the widest possible range of
traps for listed species when the AIHTS comes into force in the fall of
2007. The Trap Research and Development Committee of the Fur Institute of
Canada continues to work hard on testing and rating traps against the AIHTS.
We also continue to share trap research information with the USA to ensure
that our efforts are not duplicated.

With renewed funding from Environment Canada and the International Fur Trade
Federation, this year's priorities are to complete the otter trap CSM
(computer simulation model), complete the coyote restraining trap CSM, carry
out mechanical evaluations on new trap submissions, and to rate as many
traps as possible through the species-specific CSMs already available.

To help ensure that as many traps as possible are put forward for testing
and rating, the Institute has extended an Incentive Program for trap
manufacturers to help cover their costs. The program offers an 80% savings
from the normal cost of evaluating and rating traps against the AIHTS. We
expect that about a dozen manufacturers will take advantage of this program
and that more traps will meet the AIHTS requirements.
