FREDERICTON - Charges have been laid against seven people who were involved
in protesting and observing Canada's commercial seal hunt in the Gulf of St.
Lawrence last winter.

An official with the Fisheries Department says the individuals are being
charged with violating the terms of their observer licences by coming too
close to hunters.

Fisheries spokesman Roger Simon of Iles de la Madeleine, Que., said he
cannot name the people charged because they have yet to be notified.

Quel salopard !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mad

However, Rebecca Aldworth of the Humane Society of the United States, a
leading anti-sealing organization, said she expects to be one of the people
charged.

Aldworth was one of seven people arrested on the ice floes in the Gulf
following a close encounter between a seal vessel and an inflatable craft
carrying observers.

Aldworth says she is confident the charges will not stand up in an impartial
court since the entire incident was captured on videotape and observed by
several news reporters.
