Farmers, on the other hand, are concerned with the deeper issues being raised behind the media attention the disgraced NFL quarterback is getting. Meat and dairy producers say they are concerned about the ramifications that media attention about animal cruelty has had on agriculture. They contend that the limelight on animal cruelty has helped fundraising efforts by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and other groups. That funding may help PETA and other organizations that fuel their agendas to do away with the meat industry, said Bill McKinnon, executive secretary for the Virginia Cattle Feeders Association. McKinnon was one of about 30 producers and agribusiness attendees at a meeting held by the Virginia Agribusiness Council on Friday at the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research. PETA, however, isn't the only group opposed to animal farming that may have benefited from the increased awareness of animal cruelty, according to agriculture leaders. (...)
