Media persons in the U.S. and India (including columnist Shobhaa De, TOI 28 Sep 08) have written only about superficies concerning Ms Sarah Palin, the Republican nominee for the office of the American Vice-President. How many people, for instance, know or care about the core issues concerning her?

Under her governorship, the wildlife of Alaska has been cruelly brought to the brink of extinction. This is on account of a pernicious practice known as aerial hunting. She and her Republican cronies go up in a small plane such as a Cessna, pursue hapless bears, wolves, caribou and the like from the air, and shoot them down even as they desperately try to run for cover and save their lives. Once, Ms Palin offered a 'bounty' of U.S.$150 for the foreleg of each dead wolf shot from the air. On another occasion, she used $400,000 of state money to fund a vicious campaign against the passing of Measure 2, which would have involved a ban on aerial hunting of wolves.

Ms Palin, in keeping with American Republican practice, has encouraged drilling for oil even in a protected refuge for wildlife in Alaska. Indeed, the Republican regime has gone far in wreaking depradation on the Alaskan wilderness and cruelly killing off the wild animals in the state. Is such a person, indeed, fit to become vice-president?
