...Despite the Namibian government confirming that Yavuz was the purchaser of this year's consignment of furs, Yavuz has said that he had already stopped the purchase of Namibian seal products because of the present economic climate. The two concessionaires had also indicated that it was no longer viable for them to continue in the industry. "The world market for seal skins, particularly Namibian Cape fur seal skins, is dead, but Namibia refuses to announce an end to its cruel seal clubbing policies," said Hugo. This week Yavuz and the concessionaires contacted Hugo and asked him to purchase Namibia's sealing industry "lock, stock and barrel". This meant buying up all the remaining furs, all contracts, the processing factories in Namibia and Turkey, and creating full-time jobs for those set to lose their part-time annual income. Hugo said talks were already under way, but that he wanted to bring interested parties such as the Dutch government, which had been instrumental in securing the EU ban, De Beers, which had expressed its displeasure with the culling of seals, and potential financiers on board. "I want this to be a success story and not just a private business deal," he said. "But, it takes money. Seal Alert-SA is appealing for any financial partners to come forward to help make this deal a reality." Hugo said he had been given an undertaking by Yavuz that if this sale went through he would "walk away from the fur industry worldwide". Seal Alert-SA planned to turn the sealing factories in Namibia into seal museums for tourists after ending the seal cull. http://www.radiantliving.co.za Partager ce message Lien à poster Partager sur d’autres sites

hop 0 Posté(e) le 1 juillet 2009 The ‘business’ of saving seals is just that, business. Whether $7 is paid for a seal skin or $10 is charged to view seals in the wild or $25 is donated regularly to campaign against cruel seal hunts or $100 is donated to rescue seals or $500 is paid to adopt-a-seal or $5000 is paid for a seal fur jacket, it is all business at the end of the day. Therefore buying out the Namibian sealing industry, to stop clubbing and cruelty, to give these endangered seals a life-time in the wild, at $15 a seal, makes good business sense. The 910 000 seals earmarked to be killed by sealers until 2019, at $15 a seal, will cost Seal Alert-SA and its supporters $14 million, the price the Namibian sealing industry has offered. Today,1 July 2009 is D-Day for Namibia’s 85 000 baby seal pups. According to a front page report in The Namibian newspaper yesterday, (http://www.namibian.com.na/news-articles/national/full-story/archive/2009/june/article/million-dollar-bid-to-end-seal-clubbing ), “The sealing season starts on July 1 I think, there have been no changes”, Dr Moses Maurihungiriri, Director of Resource Management at the Ministry, told The Namibian yesterday.“We are in the third year of a three-year rolling seal quota of 85 000 seal pups and 6 000 bulls annually, which was issued in 2007,” he added. Seal Alert-SA’s, the one-man seal rescue organization based in South Africa is struggling to raise the full cash amount of $14 million US dollars the sealing industry offered it 5 days ago. Its extortion and blackmail to be placed in such a position and a heavy burden to have a million endangered seal lives and their future dependent on your financial ability to buy them their life-time as a single individual. Pledges for the buy-out of the sealers is flooding in from individuals and supporting organizations from around the world, with the highest pledge so far of $150 000 US dollars from one individual in Australia, Australian Man of the Year and a former merchant banker and another $100 000 from a television channel in China, but it takes time, and the time has run out for the seals in Namibia. Without any surety that I can raise the $14 million, I am in a catch 22-position, where I am able to put down a deposit of 10 percent of the purchase price, to contractual secure that no seal pups will be slaughtered whilst negotiations are underway to buy-out the industry.
Many reporters, readers and supporters have confessed confusion. Either we together do this or seals lose. Let us all sit down – please ! Has a single seal pup this season been clubbed to death, to this I cannot tell you, some say yes, some no, with sealers claiming they weighing the pups for size and weight on the sealing colonies because they are too small, (first time I have heard an excuse like this why the seal cull has not started) ? Is the Namibian sealing industry buyout offer off or on, again your guess is as good as mine ? All I know is that 85 000 seal pups need our support now more than ever before. (...)
