"eager to please", disent-ils aussi ; "The best thing about Silken Windhounds is how much they love their people and want to be with them as much as possible. Most Silkens are grade A cuddlers, and love nothing better than to relax draped around their two legged pals." pas une race reconnue, croisements entre borzoi & whippet à poils longs... mais tentent de se faire reconnaitre. les chiens sont superbes en tout cas je partage mes découvertes avec vous, puisqu'ils ne sont pas connus ces toutous ! (le chien blanc à l'avant est ici un saluki) SILKEN WINDHOUND BREED STANDARD adopted by the ISWS, March 2001; revised December 2005 GENERAL APPEARANCE: The Silken Windhound is an elegant, small to medium-sized sighthound with a moderately long silky coat. Its classic lines and athletic build are the hallmark of a true coursing dog. When viewing a Silken Windhound, one has the impression of grace, balance, and strength integrated with exceptional running ability. SIZE, PROPORTION, SUBSTANCE: The accepted measurements for Silken Windhounds are 18.5 -23.5 inches (47-60 cm) at the withers. Dogs over or under the ideal shall be penalized to the extent of the deviation. In proportion, Silken Windhounds are approximately square or slightly rectangular. Silkens that are excessively longer or shorter than they are tall should be penalized according to the extent of the deviation. The build of the Silken Windhound is sleek, through a balanced combination of fine bladed bone and smooth muscle, and never looks frail. Heavy, round, or coarse bone is faulty. HEAD: The Silken Windhound's expression is alert, friendly and intelligent. Eyes are reather large and dark, almond-shaped and set somewhat obliquely. Picment around eyes is full and dark. Ears are small and fine in texture, folded and lying back along the neck when in repose. When alert, ears may prick or semi-prick. Hanging, or drooping, houndy ears are undesirable. Moderately long in head, the Silken Windhound has a fairly narrow back skull which, when viewed from above, tapers gradually through a full muzzle to the nose. The muzzle is in good balance to the skull. When viewed from the side, the top plane of the muzzle is parallel to the plane of the flat skull, with a barely perceptible stop between. The head is well chiseled, skin dry and tight, with noticeable veining. The nose is dark, and may be slightly down-turned at the end. Lips and flews are tight, in keeping with the dry head. Pigment on lips is full and dark. Jaws are strong to accomodate the teeth, which are large for a dog of this size, with full dentition and scissors bite. Missing teeth should be penalized. NECK, TOPLINE, BODY: The neck is long and slender. It is slightly arched, well muscled and powerful, never ewe necked. The neck is free from dewlap or throatiness, widening gradually and symmetrically into the shoulder. The topline rises gradually from slightly behind the withers, with the highest point of the arch being over the last rib, flowing smoothly over the muscular loin, carrying through and falling gradually over the long croup. The back is short and the loin moderately long, wide, muscular and arched. It is important that the loin be flexible to sustain and drive the double suspension gallop, which Silkens exhibit when running at top speed. A flat back with steep croup is not a loin arch and should be faulted. The chest is deep with moderate spring of rib. A barrel shaped or slab sided body is faulty. The brisket reaches as nearly as possible to the elbow, with a graceful upsweep to the tuck-up; this creates the distinctive underline of the Silken Windhound. The tail is long and flexible, falling in a sweeping curve, free of kinks and reaching past the hock. When carried, the tail should not rise above the back. A tightly curled or gay tail is faulty. FOREQUARTERS: The shoulder blades are well laid back and are long and smooth with flat muscle. Fine withers are preferred. Good return of upper arm is desirable, bringing the legs well under the withers. Elbows turn neither in nor out. The forelegs are straight and strong, with pasterns straight or slightly bent, but never knuckled over. Dewclaws on front legs are acceptable. The feet are well knuckled with tough, thick pads. Both the hare foot, with its londer middle toes; and the cat foot, with its shorter middle toes, is acceptable. Hare foot is preferred. Nails are strong and of moderate length. HINDQUARTERS: Hindquarters are well angulated, with a long second thigh and well developed thigh muscles. Viewed from the rear, the hindquarters are slightly wider than the front, well muscled, without any suggestion of cowhocks. Stifles are well bent, and hock joints broad and strong. Hocks are short. Rear dewclaws may be removed. The feet are well knuckled with tough, thick pads. Both the hare foot, with its longer middle toes; and the cat foot, with its shorter middle toes, is acceptable. Hare foot is preferred. Nails are strong and of moderate length. COAT: The coat is soft, and silky in texture. In no case should the coat be wooly or profuse enough to obscure the outline of the Silken Windhound, nor so long as to interfere with the function of a coursing hound. The coat may be straight, slightly wavy, or curly. There is longer feathering along the back of the forelegs, the brisket, hindquarters, around the neck, and tail. Coat on the face, feet, front of forelegs and hocks are naturally short. Feathering that frames the ears and face adds to the dog's expression, and should not be trimmed. The Silken Windhound is shown in a natural coat with minimal trimming. COLOR, MARKINGS: All colors and markings are acceptable. GAIT: The Silken Windhound moves with a with a smooth effortless trot, which has good reach in front and good drive from the hindquarters. Restricted or wasted motion of the legs or body, when viewed from the side, is faulty. Paddling, hackneyed gait, toeing in, and toeing out are faults in front movement. The hocks should not roll in or out when rear movement is viewed. While the hind legs are wider apart than the front, the feet, both front and rear, seek a center of balance closer to the centerline when the dog moves at a fast trot. Movement which is too wide, or too narrow, or which does not converge towards a centerline, is faulty. TEMPERAMENT: The Silken Windhound is an intelligent hound of balanced character. While this breed exhibits strong prey drive in the field, they are gentle, affectionate, devoted companion animals in the home. An unwarranted show of timidity or nervousness, or any sign of hostility towards people or dogs, should be penalized. voir notamment : www.silkenwindhounds.org www.talismanhounds.com

et quelques photos : version poil long : jai aussi trouvé ce texte sur internet The history of the current Longhaired Whippet breed lies shrouded in mystery and controversy. One thing is known, and that is that the Longhaired Whippet seen in the USA was reestablished by Harvard graduate Walter Wheeler, Jr., a Whippet breeder since 1957. Beyond that point of agreement, there are two versions of how the current Longhaired Whippet came to be. ````````````````````````````````````````` Version 1 - According to Walter Wheeler, breed founder and creator: Many years ago, Mr. Wheeler alleges, he saw a fuzzy Whippet puppy in a litter of smooths owned by a noted breeder judge. He says that he asked about that puppy and was told that if the puppy developed a long coat it would be put down. This breeder judge denies that this incident ever took place. Wheeler was fascinated with the concept of a coated Whippet and says that he eventually acquired dogs from this and other bloodlines. By intense inbreeding on these dogs, he claims that he developed the Longhaired Whippet as we know it today. One of the foundation matrons for the modern Longhaired Whippets, according to Mr. Wheeler, was a British Champion, a top English show female in the late 1950s. He reported that she could not be shown for her championship before having her thick mane and fuzzy tail stripped and trimmed. Her breeder has denied this, however. Mr. Wheeler has said that her descendants have been used to produce one family of longhairs. Mr. Wheeler states that he also inbred on a particular West Coast stud to produce a successful family of longhairs. When this stud was linebred on, Wheeler alleges, he produced a coated Whippet champion who, after having his moderately long coat stripped and trimmed, became a smooth show winner, Mr. Wheeler has said. Mr. Wheeler seriously began his project to breed Longhaired Whippets in the 1970's, and by 1981 had enough of them to go public by publishing an article in The Whippet magazine, #6, 1981. In The Sighthound magazine a follow-up article was published in 1982. By then he had incorporated his club, the Longhaired Whippet Association (LWA), and by 1986 he wrote the standard and copyrighted it. ````````````````````````````````````````` Version 2 - AKC breeders, and other Whippet breeders from around the world: Others in the Whippet world claim that Walter Wheeler did indeed use his Whippets, probably including those mentioned above, in his longhaired project, but they say that he actually crossbred them with either Borzoi or Shetland Sheepdogs, or both. He did, indeed, own both of these other two breeds, and he owned Borzoi at the same time as Whippets, but there is some question regarding whether he actually owned Shelties at the same time as the Whippets. ````````````````````````````````````````` The Present: Recent (2004) DNA studies, conducted by UC Davis, and Washington State, have shown that the Longhaired Whippet breed has an autosomal recessive gene called MDR 1-1. This gene causes the dogs who possess this trait (not all of them), to be extremely sensitive to certain chemicals, including the wormer Ivermectin. This gene is not found in the Whippet population, nor is it found in the Borzoi population, however, it is found in the Shetland Sheepdog breed, indicating that there must have been at least one, "Sheltie in the woodpile at the Windsprite kennel", in the background of the Longhaired Whippet. It is unknown if there were Borzoi in the background of the Longhaired Whippet, or not, but that is also a possibility. ````````````````````````````````````````` Into the Future: Based on this recent genetic study, it is now scientifically known which of these claims are correct, but since Longhaired Whippets breed true, and since none of our current breeds of dogs dropped from the sky preformed, but were indeed all crossed with some other breed, or breeds, at some point in history, it is this breeder/author's contention that no matter how these modern Longhaired Whippets came into existence, the fact remains that they do, indeed, now exist, are pure-breeding (like to like begets like, which means that they reproduce themselves), and are delightful and charming dogs. Since the origin of these current Longhaired Whippets was for many years a matter of some question and contention, there are those who seek to have the word 'Whippet' removed from the name of these dogs. The use of a given word in more than one breed's name is referenced on the page: Formation of New Breeds Furthermore, this author contends, even though the current Longhaired Whippet is the product of crossbreeding, we have only to look at the example of the Whippet itself. While some claim that the Whippet as a breed originated only in the 1800's, from crossbreedings with terriers, it is well known that Whippet-type dogs existed long before that time. A few historical references from the 1500's are given on the page Coated Whippets in History, and also on the page Whippet History in Art. And while terriers were indeed crossbred on Whippet-type dogs in the late 1800's, when the closed registries were being formed, the resulting wirehaired Whippet type dogs were not called by another name, they were called wirehaired Whippets. The resulting smooth dogs were called smooth Whippets. A further example is the Dachshund. First there were dogs called Dachshunds who were smooth - Dachshunds. Then these smooth dogs were crossbred with terriers, and thus produced dogs called Wirehaired Dachshunds. Also the smooth Dachshunds were crossbred with spaniels and in this way produced dogs called Longhaired Dachshunds. However, even in AKC today, all coats of Dachshunds are just registered as "Dachshunds". Therefore, historic precedent has been set. There are doubtless other examples, besides the ones already cited, in other breeds, both of crossings used to produce different types, and also of the use of the same word in various breed type dogs' names. All in all, those of us who admire and seek to promote these lovely dogs thank Mr. Wheeler for making these dogs, however he did it. We are grateful to have these beautiful, little, coated rare sighthounds available to us today.

sont vraiment beaux ! je suis en communication avec la longhaired whippet association ( http://home.ica.net/~westwood/ ) et voici ce que la dame m'a répondu : Thank you for your e-mail enquiring about Longhaired Whippets. We’re always happy to hear from people who are interested. I’m Barbara Westermann, a member for the board of the Longhaired Whippet Association and also the web master for the LWA web site. All LWA dogs are pure Whippets exhibiting the long haired gene. [color=red]In answer to your questions, yes, Whippets make an ideal family pet. They are very good with other animals and children. They are calm, quiet dogs that love to snuggle and get involved with family activities. Your home sounds like a very nice one for a LHW pup. I am one of 2 people who field the reservation list for the entire LWA membership world-wide, so I know of all upcoming litters. There are a couple of LWA-Accredited breeders in Ontario. They would be the closest to you, and in fact, I am one of them myself ; ) Let me tell you a bit about how the LWA works: All Longhaired Whippets from Longhaired Whippet Association (LWA) breeders come with a lifetime guarantee, in that if you ever don’t want or can’t keep your dog for whatever reason during its life, then it goes back to the breeder, without question. All LWA breeding dogs, regardless of the breeder, are rigorously health tested and health certified in several areas, as are the generations of dogs behind them. In addition, all LWA member-raised dogs live as family members in our homes ~ not one of the LWA member breeders raises their dogs in outdoor kennels. Our puppies are raised right under foot in the main area of our houses and get lots of socialization; household noises etc., so they all go to new homes as very confident little ambassadors for our breed. We do a lot of very serious lap and cuddle training too ; ) Each member spends a lot of time with the pups and starts early crate and outdoor potty training at about 6 weeks as well as some basics in early learning. In addition, we conduct ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) training with our puppies. ENS is used on puppies that will become blind person guide-dogs and pups destined for police work. It boosts their immune systems and gives them greater resistance to disease for life, enhances their ability for training and gives them more tolerance to stress. Here’s a link to a great site that outlines ENS and its benefits if you’re interested. Not many breeders go through this much work with their litters, but we think it’s very important. http://www.breedingbetterdogs.com/achiever.html It’s a formality, but everyone that is interested in a puppy with a LWA member-breeder is asked to answer a bit of a questionnaire. It helps us to match breeders with prospective buyers and to match puppies to the right homes. You’ve already given us a little bit of information, but please bear with us and answer the following thoroughly if you wouldn’t mind. If you are interested in the possibility of a reservation on a puppy from a litter down the road, would you mind telling us a little bit about yourself please? How did you learn about/become interested in the Longhaired Whippet? How many people live in your house? What are their ages? How many other pets do you have? Breeds? Ages? Have you owned a dog(s) before? Breed? Length of time? What is your home environment like, i.e. city, country, etc. Where do you live – City, State, Province Etc.? Do you have a properly fenced yard for a dog? Are you looking for a pet to become just a loving family member or are you interested in other potential activities for your dog, i.e. showing, coursing, agility etc? Are you looking for a particular dog, i.e. male/female, color preference? Are you looking for potential breeding stock? Are you willing to sign an agreement stating that you will never sell your LHW, give it away, nor place it in an animal shelter? Are you willing to spay or neuter your dog at the age of 6 months if that is part of our companion dog agreement? Are you willing to provide references that are unrelated to you that we may speak with? If you have any questions about the breed at all, I am always available to answer them. Here’s an article in PDF format that will help you with some additional information on the breed. I would be happy to help you work towards getting a Longhaired Whippet of your own when the time is right for you! Look forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience. Bonjour Mariemi ! -
