Can This Miracle Spice Stop Cancer, Alzheimer's and Arthritis? By Dr. Mercola For more than 5,000 years, turmeric has been an important part of Eastern cultural traditions, including traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. Valued for its medicinal properties and warm, peppery flavor, this yellow-orange spice has more recently earned a name for itself in Western medicine as well. Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant, which is native to Indonesia and southern India, and is widely used as an ingredient in curry dishes and yellow mustard. As research into this powerful spice has increased, it has emerged as one of nature’s most powerful potential healers. Said Dr. David Frawely, founder and director of the American Institute for Vedic Studies in Santa Fe, New Mexico: “If I had only one single herb to depend upon for all possible health and dietary needs, I would without much hesitation choose the Indian spice Turmeric. There is little it cannot do in the realm of healing and much that no other herb is able to accomplish. Turmeric has a broad spectrum of actions, mild but certain effects, and is beneficial for long term and daily usage. Though it is a common spice, few people, including herbalists know of its great value and are using it to the extent possible. It is an herb that one should get to know and live with.” Turmeric’s Beneficial Effects in a Nutshell Strengthens and improves digestion Reduces gas and bloating Assists in the digestion of protein and with rice and bean dishes Improves your body's ability to digest fats Promotes proper metabolism, correcting both excesses and deficiencies Maintains and improves intestinal flora Improves elimination of wastes and toxins Supports healthy liver function and detox Turmeric helps increase bile flow making it a liver cleanser that can rejuvenate your liver cells and recharge their capability to break down toxins Helps to prevent alcohol and other toxins from being converted into compounds that may be harmful to your liver Supports formation of healthy tissue Purifies your blood Stimulates formation of new blood tissue Anti-inflammatory: Helps to reduce irritation to tissues characterized by pain, redness, swelling and heat Contains curcuminoids that fight cancer, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s Curcuminoids are potent phytonutrients (plant-based nutrients) that contain powerful antioxidant properties Counteract the damaging effects of free radicals in your body Relieve arthritis pain and stiffness, anti-inflammatory agent Anti-carcinogenic: “Curcumin has been shown to prevent a large of number of cancers in animal studies. Laboratory data indicate that curcumin can inhibit tumor initiation, promotion, invasion, angiogenesis and metastasis.”[1] Supports treatment of Alzheimer’s disease: “Because Alzheimer's disease is caused in part by amyloid-induced inflammation, curcumin has been shown to be effective against Alzheimer's. Clinical trials are in progress at UCLA with curcumin for Alzheimer's.”[2] Curcumin: Turmeric’s Active Anti-Inflammatory “Ingredient” Most notably turmeric is known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties, which come from curcumin -- the pigment that gives turmeric its yellow-orange color, and which is thought to be responsible for many of its medicinal effects. There are an estimated three to five grams of curcumin in 100 grams of turmeric. Curcumin has been shown to influence more than 700 genes, and it can inhibit both the activity and the synthesis of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX), as well as other enzymes that have been implicated in inflammation.[3] Turmeric’s Cancer-Fighting Properties In India where turmeric is widely used, the prevalence of four common U.S. cancers -- colon, breast, prostate and lung -- is 10 times lower. In fact, prostate cancer, which is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in U.S. men, is rare in India and this is attributed, in part, to turmeric. Numerous studies have looked into this potential cancer-fighting link, with promising results. For instance, curcumin has been found to: Inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells Inhibit the transformation of cells from normal to tumor Help your body destroy mutated cancer cells so they cannot spread throughout your body Decrease inflammation Enhance liver function Inhibit the synthesis of a protein thought to be instrumental in tumor formation Prevent the development of additional blood supply necessary for cancer cell growth As for the results of research studies, a study in Biochemical Pharmacology found that curcumin can slow the spread of breast cancer cells to the lungs in mice.[4] "Curcumin acts against transcription factors, which are like a master switch," said lead researcher, Bharat Aggarwal. "Transcription factors regulate all the genes needed for tumors to form. When we turn them off, we shut down some genes that are involved in the growth and invasion of cancer cells." A second study in Biochemical Pharmacology also found that curcumin inhibits the activation of NF-kappaB, a regulatory molecule that signals genes to produce a slew of inflammatory molecules (including TNF, COX-2 and IL-6) that promote cancer cell growth.[5] Turmeric’s Essential Role for Your Liver Your liver’s primary role is to process and remove toxins carried in your bloodstream. When functioning at its peak, it can filter up to two liters of blood per minute and easily break apart toxic molecules to reduce their toxicity. Your liver is also a crucial part of vitamin, mineral, protein, fat, carbohydrate and hormonal metabolism. However, poor diet, allergens, pollution and stress can cause your liver to become sluggish, and this can impair its vital functions. This is where turmeric can be a very useful part of your liver support system. Studies have shown that it: May increase important detoxification enzymes in your liver Induces the formation of a primary liver detoxification enzyme, glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzymes Turmeric is also a natural cholagogue, a medicinal agent that promotes the discharge of bile from your system. Increased bile flow is important to help your liver detoxify and to help your body digest fats. Turmeric for Your Heart, Brain and Overall Health Turmeric inhibits free radical damage of fats, including cholesterol. When cholesterol is damaged in this way, or oxidized, it can then damage your blood vessels and lead to a heart attack or stroke. Therefore, research suggests that turmeric’s ability to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol may be beneficial for your heart. It’s also rich in vitamin B6, high intakes of which are associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. Meanwhile, turmeric appears to be highly protective against neurodegenerative diseases. In fact, in India levels of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s are very low, and studies have shown that curcumin can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s in mice. The compound has also proven capable of blocking the progression of multiple sclerosis. Further, Professor Moolky Nagabhushan from the Loyola University Medical Center, Chicago, IL, who has been studying turmeric for the last 20 years, believes that turmeric can protect against harmful environmental chemicals, and in so doing protect against childhood leukemia. The research showed that curcumin in turmeric can:[7] Inhibit the toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (cancer-causing chemicals in the environment) Inhibit radiation-induced chromosome damage Prevent the formation of harmful heterocyclic amines and nitroso compounds, which may result in the body when eating certain processed foods, such as processed meat products Irreversibly inhibit the multiplication of leukemia cells in a cell culture Turmeric's volatile oils also have external anti-bacterial action. As such, they may help prevent bacterial wound infections and accelerate wound healing. Johnson & Johnson even sells a curcumin-containing Band-Aid in India! And the therapeutic potential of turmeric and curcumin do not end there. Evidence suggests the spice may also be beneficial for: Cystic fibrosis Type 2 diabetes Crohn’s disease Psoriasis Rheumatoid arthritis Cataracts Gallstones Muscle regeneration Inflammatory bowel disease Which Type of Turmeric is Best? For use in cooking, choose a pure turmeric powder, rather than a curry powder. At least one study has found that curry powders tend to contain very little curcumin, compared to turmeric powder. Turmeric is also available in supplement form and for many this is a more convenient method to obtain these health benefits discussed above, especially if they are from a high-quality organic source and if one doesn’t particularly enjoy the taste of curry. On my recent trip to India I was able to find a company called Organic India that produces probably some of the best Indian herbs on the planet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Complementary/Integrative Medicine Education Resources, “Curcumin at M.D. Anderson” (accessed January 22, 2009) [2] The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Complementary/Integrative Medicine Education Resources, “Curcumin at M.D. Anderson” (accessed January 22, 2009) [3] The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Complementary/Integrative Medicine Education Resources, “Curcumin at M.D. Anderson” (accessed January 22, 2009) [4] Biochemical Pharmacology, Volume 70, Issue 5, 1 September 2005, Pages 700-713 [5] The World’s Healthiest Foods, Turmeric [6] The World’s Healthiest Foods, Turmeric [7] The World’s Healthiest Foods, Turmeric Source The World’s Healthiest Foods: Turmeric

http://www.akitarescue.com/demodectic_mange-a_natural_treatment.htm TREATING DEMODECTIC MANGE NATURALLY Demodectic Mange (Demodex canis), also called Red Mange, is a non-contagious skin disease caused by a tiny, eight-legged parasitic mite that lives in the hair follicles and skin glands of dogs. Puppies are infected with mites from contact with the skin of their mother while nursing. The disease is seen in two forms: · Localized mange, which is confined to a few small areas such as the face or front feet, and is relatively easy to treat, occurs in puppies under one year of age. · Generalized mange is much more severe, and treatment is not always successful. Most dogs have a microscopic mite population hitching a ride on their body, but the dog's immune system handles it all very nicely. When the immune system is no longer able to control the mites, they begin multiplying, then attacking. It is thought that dogs infected with demodectic mange are immunodeficient. In other words, they are not able to fight off the mites like a healthy dog would. Heredity is believed to play a part in dogs that show signs of demodectic mange so it is strongly recommended that infected dogs be spayed or neutered. Signs of disease appear only when mites reproduce unchecked and occur in unnaturally high numbers. Outbreaks are seen around the eyes, lips and/or lower limbs when the numbers of these mites increase. Because the immune system does not mature until 12-18 months of age, a dog with demodectic mange may have relapses until that age. It is important for treatment to begin promptly to minimize the possibility of developing uncontrollable problems. Demodectic mange in dogs over 2 years of age is classified as adult-onset, and usually occurs secondary to an underlying cause. Successful treatment of adult-onset mange relies upon identifying and correcting the underlying cause. Dogs with immune suppression due to illnesses like hypothyroid disease, and Cushing's disease, are also candidates for demodectic mange. Demodectic mange may also occur in very old dogs because function of the immune system often declines with age. Some dogs infected with demodectic mange may have secondary skin infections. The skin becomes dry, crusty, and brittle, it will ooze serum, blood or pus. A strong, offensive skin odor may be present due to a bacterial infection. The secondary infection responds to antibiotics like cephalexin or clavamox. Conventional treatment depends upon the severity of the disease. Generally, veterinarians recommend treatment with a dip containing Amitraz. The dip is repeated every 7-10 days. Although the dog may respond well to the dip and look normal, dipping must be continued until negative skin scrapings are found consistently for a few weeks. The dipping may have side effects. Sleepiness and itching are common for 24 hours after the dip. Some dogs many experience decreased body temperature, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite, excitability, staggering, or other personality changes. If any of these side effects occur you should contact your veterinarian immediately. Amitraz can reduce the function of the hypothalamus, which helps regulate the body's metabolism by controlling hormone release in the body. In animal studies, amitraz caused episodes of increased aggression, as well as some central nervous system depression. In addition to the dip, to treat more generalized cases of mange, many veterinarians are now prescribing daily doses of Eqvalan, which is liquid ivermectin. Dr. Jean Dodds has written extensively about ivermectin as a trigger for immune-mediated diseases. Ivermectin should not be used in combination with Amitraz dip nor with Amitraz tick prevention collars. These medicines are all members of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor group; when they are used together their effects combine together creating sedation and adverse neurologic effects. Conventional treatments do work but at what expense to your dog's health? Since conventional veterinary medicine relies heavily on a highly toxic method of treatment, and suppressed immune function is the cause of demodectic outbreaks, you should consider an alternative. Using a combination of natural diet, vitamins, minerals and herbs, you support the immune system while treating the skin. Food selection: Immune suppressed dogs require a high quality, all natural food. Select a raw food diet, a cooked diet, or an ultra premium dry food with lots of raw pulverized vegetables. Select organically grown vegetables or use one of the pesticide cleaners available in supermarkets for use on fruits and vegetables. Add leafy dark green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables — broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, watercress, bok choy, and carrots (carrots should be blanched one minute to release the carotenes). If you feed raw foods, increase the veggies. To each meal: sprinkle a teaspoon of sesame seed oil--on the food. This is an important oil for immune function and skin repair. Also add a variety of dried sea vegetables like wakami, nori, dulce and kelp. The sea vegetables should be offered at least 4-5 days a week or even every day if your Akita likes it. Feed fish, boneless poached or canned fish. Do not use tuna, tuna and swordfish are laden with mercury; sardines, salmon, mackerel or fresh water fish are good choices. When giving fish, cook some white rice and mix with the fish. Avoid grains like wheat or rye--rice, barley and oats are okay. NO VACCINES. Not even one. The immune system in these dogs is already severely stressed; they do not need additional viral components circulating in the blood. Stop using all chemicals including dips, flea/tick spot-ons, pills, or flea collars. You are attempting to reinstate immune function not add to the collective damage. The following supplements are for the immune system and should be given daily. If you find a product that combines these antioxidants in one capsule, use it: · Zinc: 50mg (chelated type) · Selenium: 200mcg (There is a product called Selene E from Twinlabs. It contains the right amount of selenium and Vitamin E) · Vitamin E: 400 IU twice daily · Cod liver oil capsules: 3 gel caps twice daily · One gel cap daily: 25,000 IU of Marine carotene (it is available in health food stores—another Twinlabs product. · Vitamin C with bioflavonoids: start at 500mg and work up to 3,000mg by increasing in increments of 500mg weekly. If your dog develops a loose stool, back off by 500mg and maintain the level. · Nutritional yeast: one tablespoon daily · Lecithin granules: one teaspoon daily · Milk thistle: follow directions on bottle for an adult human. · One-half teaspoon of bee pollen (optional but great nutrients) · Hokamix 30, a vitamin/mineral/herbal supplement: follow directions on container The following herbs are to boost her immune system and fight bacterial infections. Wherever possible purchase organic herbs that are "Standardized." · Olive Leaf Extract: Follow directions on bottle. · Astragulus: Follow directions on bottle. · Cat's Claw: Follow directions on bottle. · Kyolic garlic: Follow directions on bottle. · Pau d'Arco: 4 capsules twice daily. · Grapefruit Seed Extract Capsules or tablets: 225mg daily. · Flax seed oil (organic) gel caps: one twice daily. · Plant based digestive enzymes available at health food stores. Give two capsules per meal. Add a few tablespoons of plain yogurt to each meal or give acidophilus supplements. It is very important to maintain good intestinal bacteria when fighting parasites. Homeopathics: Do not touch the pellets with your hand, simply twist or shake them into the little cap and pour into the dog’s mouth: · Sulphur 6X: one tablet in am and one in pm: use for 10 days. · Silica FOR THE TOPICAL TREATMENTS: Consider the degree of sensitivity of the open sores. If your dog is very sore and sensitive, you can give two valerian capsules an hour before you use the solutions. It is an herbal tranquilizer-very safe-that will take the edge off and make the dog more comfortable. After a few days, she won't need valerian because she will begin to heal enough to treat without help. If the inflamed skin is severe, ask your veterinarian for lidocaine spray and use it sparingly to control surface pain before applying topical treatment. Pain adds stress and stress should be avoided. You should experiment to find the most effective solution with the least discomfort. Start carefully with a dilution to see how much your dog can tolerate. Purchase the herbs as liquid extracts; the grapefruit seed extract is available as a liquid. Topical treatment #1 Mix a combination of one part lavender oil, one part Neem oil, to 9 parts almond oil. Apply to sores and infected areas once or twice daily. Topical treatment #2 Mix ten drops of yellow dock extract with ten drops of Echinacea extract, dilute with four ounces of distilled water and apply. Yellow dock is effective as an itch treatment. Other herbs that help with itching are calendula and aloe vera. Topical Treatment #3 Make up a mixture of three tablespoons fresh lemon juice mixed with two ounces of witch hazel and four ounces of distilled water: Add 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract and six drops each of tea tree oil, golden seal root, olive leaf extract, and pau d'arco. Keep away from the eyes. Spray or dab onto sores once a day. After each application each case, allow the topical solutions to dry. The following Bach Remedies are an adjunct to this program: Bach remedies are flower extracts that help with the psychological effects of disease and emotional upsets. Combine equal parts of the following remedies into one dark glass bottle, and a small amount of distilled water. Keep the remedies in a cool dark place. Add about 15 drops to the water bowl daily: · Agrimony · Crab Apple · Cherry Plum · Walnut · Beech NO DRUGS. NO CHEMICALS. NO DIPS. Each of these will further damage the immune system. It is difficult if not impossible to get an accurate reading of thyroid function when the dog is ill with demodectic mange. This is especially true when dips and biocides are used initially as a treatment. To assist the immune system in recovery, I suggest starting a trial with Soloxine. Soloxine does not shut down thyroid function it assists the gland by adding hormone to the bloodstream. Once the dog is well, you can stop the Soloxine and if the dog had normal thyroid function prior to the demodectic event, the gland will resume the same level of function after thirty days. The danger is not using thyroid hormone replacement in a dog with hypothyroid disease and since accurate testing is difficult under the circumstances, using Soloxine by Daniels is recommended. Of course, discuss all of this with your veterinarian or seek out a homeopathic veterinarian. http://www.alternativepets.com/demodex.html DEMODEX by Cat Donnelly, Pet Nutritional Consultant Demodex is not a genetic disease. Demodex mites feed on systemic yeast in the body, and the systemic yeast feed on the dietary yeast and/or sugar in the system (blood sugar). As you will see, my method of dealing with demodex is to starve the mite by taking away it's food source, which is the yeastie beastie. Without this food source, the demodex will easily die off without dipping or insecticides of any kind. Demodex mites take advantage of an immature or lowered immune system which is why the very young get it, and sometimes the very old or ill. A dog's immune system is not fully mature until at least one year, sometimes longer. This is only one reason why it is NOT advisable to breed dogs younger than 18 - 24 months minimum. Demodex mites are living in just about every dog, deep within the hair follicles. When pups are nursing, the mites migrate from the mom to the pups. This is why the most common areas to show demodex first are on the face, head and front paws, and then they migrate to every other area of the body. When the immune system is maturing but battling to keep the mites in balance, you can sometimes see hairless patches appearing and disappearing on different parts of the body. It may even progress to the point where the mites colonize and erupt on the surface, making the skin look pimply or rashy. Don't bother with Goodwinol ointment because it is worthless, in my experience. You would get better results from dabbing lemon juice or apple cider vinegar on the spots, or spraying with colloidal silver. Apple cider vinegar will keep the odor down from any secondary staph infection. Yeasty ears will commonly be a problem during this battle. The reason why vets and others say that demodex is genetic is because they are still working with the old information, and even with the knowledge that it is a mite, it is hard to break that habit. Other possibilities are: 1) They must not understand the life of a demodectic mite. Demodex is not in the genetic make-up in any way whatsoever. There is no genetic mutation or genetic marker that causes demodex. The immune system is a living thing that can be raised or suppressed, it is not fixed. The mite is an opportunistic parasite only, and can be eradicated completely. 2) they also must not understand how the body can be helped to fight demodex off on it's own (through diet and supplementation), without toxins taken internally and applied externally which have long-lasting and detrimental effects. 3) they must not understand the role that diet has on the immune system and therefore the demodectic mite. While demodex was once a rare state of dis-ease, generations of being fed kibble and overzealous vaccination programs wear down the immune system of each successive generation until today you hear about demodectic puppies all the time. You can take a dam who has produced an entire litter of demodectic pups, put her on a grainless raw diet (a la Kymythy Schultze) with supplementation for a year, breed her again and she will not produce any demodex in the subsequent litter. I know, because I've done it. If it were genetic, or in the genes, it would not matter WHAT I fed her, at least a certain percentage of her pups would have it. So, if a breeder had fed BRAND X dog food and followed the old vaccination protocols for several generations, and her dogs have subclinically (no outward signs) been getting weaker immune systems, then to the naked eye it would logically look like the problem is genetic. This particular dam starts spontaneously producing litter after litter of demodex pups in a line that had previously been clear of it, but it's manageable so they keep breeding her anyway. When her pups are bred, they produce all demodex pups, only worse cases. Clearly this must be due to a "bad gene." This logic is as good as seeing birds fly south in the winter and deducing that ALL birds fly south for the winter. It might initially appear to be true, but further investigation tells you that it is not. Mites are not a part of any gene, so that statement doesn't even make sense. It's the immune system that is inherited, not the particular disease. The problem with their logic is that you can take this line and turn it completely around through upgrading their diet and modifying the vaccination schedule, or eliminating vaccines altogether. Switch to a better kibble. Give healthy snacks like sliced melon or peeled apple slices that have live enzymes instead of biscuits which are a "dead" food. Give good quality supplements. The best possible scenario, in my opinion, would be to feed grainless BARF (biologically appropriate raw foods). Anyone wanting to pursue that diet should have Kymythy Schultze's book on the subject. Home cooked is also a very good regimen to raise the health of our companions if it's a choice between that or any kibble. A book I highly recommend is Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Cats and Dogs. Okay, so now that we have established that demodex could not possibly be genetic, let me say that it is "congenital" in that a sub-standard immune system is passed on from the mother to the pups, and the mites can migrate to the pups from the mom shortly after birth. After generations of being fed kibbles, which are a "dead" food, the mom will have little immunity to pass on to her pups, and she will harbor plenty of demodectic mites in her pores ready to migrate to the pups that her own immune system is keeping in check. That is the sum total of the relationship between demodectic mites and how it is "inherited" from the mom by her pups. So, you HAVE demodex and don't know what to do about it? Can it be treated naturally? YES! In fact, I would highly recommend it. The conventional path is highly toxic (as evidenced if you've ever seen a dog after it's dipped) and can keep your pet's immune system weakened for life. There is usually absolutely no reason for this, in my experience. Here is the holistic protocol: 1) Feed an anti-yeast diet (LINK TO ALLERGY/YEAST ARTICLE). Mites feed on the systemic yeast or yeast living in the body, and systemic yeast feed on nutritional yeast and sugars (carbohydrates). If you break the cycle, you weaken or starve the systemic yeast and then the mites cannot colonize in the pores, crowding and pushing out the hairs and migrating to other pores looking for food. This is the reason for grainless diet (ESPECIALLY NO WHEAT OR NUTRITIONAL YEAST OF ANY KIND) with only meat, bones and low glycemic fruits and veggies (green leafy, not root veggies), or in other words, only foods that do not readily raise your pet's blood sugar. Plain kefir is a wonderful anti-yeast food, in moderation. Plain yogurt is a secondary substitute. Acidophilus/lactobacillus (pro-biotics) supplementation is preferred because overall, dairy will feed yeast. No cheese, no cottage cheese. If grains have to be used, make sure they are whole grains and not refined. No sweeteners of any kind, including molasses, honey, etc. Many have reported good results from supplementing with Immune Factor bovine colostrum, which is a pro-biotic that works in the lower digestive tract. If feeding kibble, I would recommend Flint River Ranch Lamb/millet/rice kibble. This can be ordered by calling (909) 682-5048 and telling them you were referred by distributor AK53 (Cat Donnelly). If you have a hard time getting through, I would be glad to call your order in for you. Your food will come via UPS. Be sure to have me send you the feeding guidelines since you feed so much less than most commercial foods. The cost "as fed" should work out to be very close to most commercial kibbles, even though the cost per pound is more. 2) Make sure the pup gets LOTS of rest! This is crucial. If the pup is in a high traffic area, it is important to put a crate in a quiet room and give him frequent rest periods. 3) Fresh air and sunshine are very therapeutic. Regular exercise and playtime is a must. Think HEALTHY. Do what the dog loves. Channel his energies by training him, teaching him tricks. Oxygenating the blood is an important part of an anti-yeast regimen. Yeast thrive in moist, dark places with little to no oxygen. 4) NO STRESS. If you are in a stressful relationship, make a choice, the partner or the pup must go for the good of the pup. I am dead serious. You may be faced with giving the pup up to a better home for his/her own good if you are not willing to give up the partner. If your pup has a high stress personality, perhaps some Primorye Pet would be in order. Go to oxyfreshww.com and use 180606370 as the referring distributor. The most stressful part of a female pup's life is being in heat. If you cannot get this under control quickly, do not put her through the stress of being in heat. The stress of the spay operation is far less than what you will see erupt during the heat cycle, believe me when I tell you that I speak from experience. 5) On top of a good diet, I highly recommend supplementing with anti-oxidants (I carry Oxyfresh Pet Anti-oxidants or K&R's Super OxyGreen), or you can supplement with separate anti-oxidant vitamins like Vit C and Vit E. It's usually cheaper to go combo. The recommended daily dosage is Vit C 250 - 1,000 milligrams depending on size, vitamin E 100 IU to 400 IU. Other supplements to consider are apple cider vinegar in the water (a scant tsp will do, it's very strong), and vitamin 'F' or essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids will help the skin heal quickly and the hair/fur to grow back. I carry an excellent line from K&R Naturals called MaxiDerm. For demodex, I highly recommend Nupro liver-flavored vitamin/mineral powder which also contains pro-biotics AND essential fatty acids as well. It also contains lecithin with is great for the immune system and healing. The manufacturer makes Nupro specially for us at Alternative Pets without any nutritional yeast. Don't let the dosage scare you off, you can cut it in half after the first 8 weeks. Echinacea and Goldenseal can be used internally, and also externally on the affected skin (for secondary staph). It is both an anti-fungal and also aids in healing. 6) Our most powerful anti-yeast tool by far is Yeast & Fungal Detox which is a tincture your give 3x/day in water. It can be given in food if you double the dosage. This ensures that you are not only weakening the yeast, but really eradicating it. Typically the dog will go through a "healing crisis" for a day or two, and then they will be phenomenally better. The healing crisis may include fever, eye exudate, mucus from the nose, yeast ears (use Ear Wash & Dry), itchy skin eruptions (Aller'G Free, Dermaplex shampoo and Rejuva spray or Rejuva Gel helps), and can even include a little diarrhea. This is the only way the body can eradicate the yeast, and the mites that feed on the yeast. Do not panic, it will get better. Any acute symptoms are rare and should be immediately evaluated by a veterinarian. 7) Zinc is also helpful during this treatment. You can feed ground pumpkin seeds or 10 - 30 milligrams of chelated zinc tablets. 8) Absolutely NO vaccinations until the crisis is over and behind you for quite some time. Tell your veterinarian that you want a health waiver until the pup is clear of demodex for at least 2 months or more. It says on the vaccine vials that they should ONLY be given to healthy animals. Since demodex is considered life threatening in some cases (usually only because it's mismanaged with suppressive and toxic therapies), you cannot damage the immune system further with vaccinations at this time. The key is that you need to enforce the immune system, not give it something ELSE to try to deal with. That makes NO sense. If your vet doesn't agree, find one who will. It is essential. Also, using cortisone on demodectic dogs will almost make treating the disease impossible. 9) Find ways to control parasites naturally. Nature's Finest Herbal Wormer can be used monthly to keep tapeworm and other parasites under control. It contains ground walnut hull which is what naturalists use to keep heartworm in check. You can also use aromatherapy (Aromaleigh Flea Spritz) to keep fleas and mosquitoes away. You can place beneficial nematodes and plant lemon grasses in the yard. There is a wealth of information out there to keep you away from putting poison in your dog each month (apparently heartworm preventative incidentally is only needed every 6 weeks but they think the general public is too stupid to grasp that and so make it monthly), plus another dab of toxin between the shoulder blades. There are other ways to handle it in my opinion. It might take more work, but the end result is a healthier dog and a healthier you (you don't need those toxins in your environment either). 10) Dr. Pitcairn recommends the homeopathic Sulphur 6x with daily doses over a period of 4 weeks. At each treatment, place just one pellet or tablet on the tongue or down the throat (without touching it yourself). Do not feed your pet 10 minutes before or after this treatment. When the condition is obviously clearing up, taper off of the treatments by giving the doses further apart. If there isn't a complete cure in 4 weeks, then you can continue the treatment for as long as it helps for a period of several months (but this is rare). 11) Dr. Pitcairn recommends a five day fast before starting the program if the dog is at a good weight and it's overall health is good. A fast is something you ease into and ease out of, and he has complete instructions in Chapter 15 of his book, Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats.
